Trekking the Larapinta Trail: A Journey Through the Heart of Central Australia

Lessons in Wilderness Preparedness and Finding Adventure in the Outback

The call of the wild is something that resonates with many people, but the idea of venturing out into the wilderness can also be daunting. As an outdoor educator, I’ve seen firsthand the benefits of planning and preparation when it comes to wilderness expeditions. In fact, my recent 5-day hike along the entire Grampians Peaks Trail in Victoria taught me the importance of these things.

My friends and I had set out with big ambitions, we quickly realised the magnitude of the journey ahead. We had underestimated the physical and mental toll the hike would take on us. However, we pushed through and completed the trail, coming out on the other side with a newfound sense of confidence and respect for the wilderness.

Now, we’re planning a 10-day expedition along The Larapinta Trail in Central Australia. This awe-inspiring hiking track is 223 kilometers long and winds its way through the rugged beauty of Central Australia. Along the way, hikers are treated to breathtaking views of the West MacDonnell Ranges from Alice Springs to Mount Sonder. But, as I mentioned earlier, planning for safety is crucial.

When planning a wilderness expedition, it’s essential to consider:

  • communication (mobile reception, satellite phone, inReach)

  • warmth (appropriate clothing, lightweight and durable)

  • shelter (don’t rely on finding a cave or hotel, bring your own)

  • direction (map and compass)

  • fuel (food and hydration)

  • and access (trailheads, roads, nearby towns)

These are the key elements that will ensure your safety and success on the trail.

It’s also important to avoid common mistakes like:

  • inappropriate footwear (e.g. white Nike air force 1’s)

  • inadequate water supply, or none at all

  • and insufficient lighting (no headtorch)

  • ineffective rainwear (puffer jacket)

By planning and preparing properly, you’ll be able to approach the journey with confidence and spontaneity. You’ll be better equipped to make on-the-fly decisions and truly immerse yourself in the natural world. The wilderness has a way of teaching us about our emotions, bodily functions, and our relationship with the environment. It’s a sense of oneness that is both calming and restorative.

I’m excited to take you on this journey with me over the next year as I plan for the Larapinta Trail expedition. By sharing my process, I hope to inspire and educate others to venture out into the wilderness with confidence and a sense of adventure. Remember, if you fail to prepare, you’re preparing to fail.
